Children & Baby Product Recalls: Here’s How To Keep Your Family Safe

Updated on
baby product recalls

Overview

Recalls have been increasing in the US in recent years. In 2023 alone, as many as 323 product recalls were announced by the CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) – and 101 of these were recalls of children’s and baby essentials. (1)(2)(3)

Based on data from Statistica, children’s product recalls have increased in the past two years to about twice as much since 2018. Children’s products are defined as items made, designed, and marketed for 14 years old and younger. (2)

Recalled products can be dangerous, especially to young children. Many of these recalls were due to manufacturing defects or contaminations reported by dozens of affected customers. Some recalls, especially for toys and formulas, were even issued due to deaths (see report on toy deaths).

Examples of recent recalls that involved children or infant deaths:

Due to their safety concerns, keeping recalled products away from your children and family is essential.

Teresa Murray, the Consumer Watchdog director of the U.S. PIRG Education Fund, said in a recent report: (1)(4)

It’s clear that dangerous products truly threaten all of us, our children and our homes. The injuries and deaths that occur are tragic and difficult to read about. We’re often not safe at home, and we don’t even know it.

It’s especially concerning because nursery products may be involved in around 160 children’s deaths and thousands of injuries yearly. (5)

Aside from product recalls, public warnings and safety alerts have increased 3x in 2023 compared to the previous year. (4)

Most children and baby product recalls were for sleepwear, toys, and various sleep products (e.g., loungers, inclined sleepers, and cribs). However, other baby essentials such as teethers, strollers, car seats, pacifiers, and food (e.g., children’s snacks and baby food) have also been recalled.

It’s also important to also watch out for products that may have safety concerns but weren’t recalled (e.g., high lead levels in popular kids’ snacks).

How do you find baby and children’s product recalls, and how can you keep your family safe?

We’ll discuss these below.

How Do I Find Recalls On Baby Products?

Different government agencies are in charge of various consumer products in the US. They’re also responsible for regularly checking for these products’ quality and safety. You can check their websites for recalls and safety alerts:

  • NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) – nhtsa.gov for car seat recalls
  • FDA (Food and Drug Administration) – fda.gov/safety/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts for food, medicines and drugs, and medical equipment
  • CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) – cpsc.gov/Recalls for all other product recalls not covered by the NHTSA and FDA

How To Keep Your Family Safe From Product Recalls?

  • Regularly check for product recalls, safety notices, and warnings or alerts.
  • Immediately remove recalled products and keep them out of reach until you receive a replacement or repair kit, or send them back to the store or manufacturer for a refund.
  • Not all manufacturing defects, contaminations, or safety issues are visible. It’s important never to use recalled products with safety issues, even if they look okay. They can cause harm without any warning.
  • Sometimes, recalled products can be safe if the defective or potentially hazardous parts are removed. For example, the manufacturer might recommend removing pom-poms, loose plastic caps, small knobs, or certain parts from affected products so your kids can use the toys or products safely. This might also apply to long strings or cords that can cause strangulation risks.
