What’s The Thomas Train Recall?

On October 19, 2023, Fisher Price Inc., of East Aurora, New York, recalled about 21,000 units of two variations of Thomas & Friends train toys. According to the recall notice, the small plastic piece with a high-powered magnet that connects the trains can become loose or detach, posing magnet ingestion and choking hazards to young children. The voluntary recall was issued after Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway received one report of the affected plastic connector becoming and detaching from the toy. (1)(2)

Thankfully, no injuries were reported relating to this toy recall. (1)

According to the recall advisory from the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission), 400 units of these toys are also being recalled in Canada. (1)

 

What Thomas & Friends Toys Are Recalled?

This toy recall involves two variations of Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway trucks measuring approximately 3.6 inches long x 2.1 inches high: (1)(2)

  • Troublesome Truck & Crates
  • Troublesome Truck & Paint

 

Both trucks are designed as push-along wooden trains with characters from Thomas & Friends under the toy line “Troublesome Trucks.” (1)(2)

They have magnetic connectors that let your child attach them to other vehicles. (1)(2)

All the affected toys were sold from February 2022 through August 2023 through the following outlets: (1)

  • Barnes & Noble
  • Specialty stores nationwide and other websites

 

They’re easily identifiable by the faces on the front portion of the train cars. (see photos below) (1)(2)

This Thomas & Friends toy features a gray and black train car with a cargo of gray paint cans. It also has prints that mimic yellow paint splatter on its side. (1)(2)

What Was The Lead Paint Crisis On The Thomas Wooden Railway?

In June 2007, about 1.5 million different Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway Toys were recalled over lead poisoning hazards. (see list of affected toys below) (3)

According to the recall advisory, the surface paints of these recalled railway toys can contain lead, which can lead to adverse (ill) health effects on young children. (3)

Some ill effects of lead include the following: (4)

  • Damage to children’s brain and nervous system
  • Possible behavior and learning issues
  • Possible speech and hearing issues
  • Stunted growth and development
