Stroller Recalls 2020-2023: What You Need To Know

Updated on

Overview

It’s important to monitor stroller recalls to help reduce your children’s risk of injury and death.

According to the annual report on nursery products by the CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission), stroller-related injuries are among the leading reasons for emergency department-treated injuries of children under five years old. (1)

These are the estimated number of stroller-related injuries treated in the ER in recent years (in the US): (1)

  • 2019: 7,200
  • 2020: 5,100
  • 2021: 6,600

Over the years, various brands like Mockingbird, UPPAbaby, and Baby Trend have issued voluntary recalls or safety alerts on their stroller products due to consumer reports of incidents, including falls, lacerations, contusions, and even death.

Find more information about these recalls below.

Baby Trend Safety Alert 2023

What’s The Baby Stroller Warning?

On February 09, 2023, the CPSC issued a safety warning for Baby Trend Sit N’ Stand Double and Ultra strollers over possible neck or head entrapment, which can result in serious injuries, loss of consciousness, or death. (4)(5)

According to the CPSCs safety notice, the space behind and in front of the stroller’s pivoting front canopy can cause entrapment when: (4)(5)

  • An occupant child in the front seat isn’t securely restrained with the five-point harness
  • A non-occupant kid climbs on the stroller’s exterior

Sadly, a non-occupant 14-month-old child died from suffocation after their neck got entrapped in the space between a double stroller’s armrest and canopy tube. The child’s father was reportedly nearby but didn’t notice the child. (5)

Baby Trendy also received one report of a partially secured 17-month-old child suffering neck bruises after getting entrapped in the space between the front seat’s back and the canopy tube. The child wasn’t fully secured by the five-point harness. (5)

Baby Trend hasn’t recalled these strollers, explaining that these baby products are safe when used as intended and following the safety guidelines. (4)

The safety alert covers the following models: (4)(5)

  • Double strollers: beginning with “SS76”
  • Ultra strollers: beginning with “SS66”

You can check the model number on a sticker placed on the stroller frame’s left inside rear, near the left rear axle. (5)

You can continue using these affected strollers as intended. Some ways to keep your baby safe: (4)(5)

  • Always fully secure your child using the stroller’s built-in five-point harness
