Yumi Baby Food Reviews: Is It Worth The Cost?

Updated on

Overview

Are you looking for Yumi baby food reviews to determine whether it’s a healthy and cost-effective option? Then, you’ve reached the right place, mama. Let’s go through the pros and cons of Yumi and learn why organic baby food may be better for your little one than conventional baby food you can buy at the grocery store.

Is Yumi Good Baby Food?

Yumi is a food company offering dairy-free, organic baby food delivered right to your doorstep every week. It’s the brainchild of co-founders Angela Sutherland and Evelyn Rusli. This baby food subscription company offers meals created by a team of pediatricians, nutritionists, and chefs with your baby’s developmental milestones in mind. Superfoods such as quinoa, chia, beets, blueberries, sweet potatoes, cauliflower, cinnamon, ginger, and flaxseed are used as ingredients in different Yumi meal options. Unlike Little Spoon, however, the meals are not custom-made for your baby, and you are free to select or customize the flavors in each box. In addition, you can remove items that your baby doesn’t like to eat.

Pricing/Packages

Yumi baby food subscriptions can vary, with the total price you’ll need to pay depending on how many baby meals you order per week and whether you’re paying weekly or monthly.

You can save more if you order more jars per week and pay every month instead of every week. Options include:

  • 8 meals a week
  • 16 meals a week
  • 24 meals a week

Yumi doesn’t charge a shipping fee, unlike Little Spoon.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • All Yumi food products are made from certified organic, non-GMO ingredients.
  • Pediatricians, nutritionists, and chefs team up to create the menus.
  • Finger foods are available for baby-led weaning.
  • Foods are freshly made and delivered every week.
  • Shipping is free.
  • You can customize your order to exclude foods your baby doesn’t like to eat.
  • They color-code their items to help you stay organized.
  • You can freeze jars for up to two months.

Cons

  • Yumi is prepared in a facility that processes peanuts, increasing the possibility of cross-contamination. So if your little one has a peanut allergy, this is something to note.
  • Yumi only offers food for toddlers up to two years old.
  • They don’t offer health boosters or natural remedies.

Is Yumi a Healthy Baby Food Brand?

All Yumi products are made only from certified organic ingredients by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) through the CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers). The products are also kosher certified (prepared under Jewish law) by Kosher LA.

Personalized Dietitian Advice

Under Yumi’s milestones program, you get five free personalized dietitian advice and nutritional coaching sessions via SMS text. But each shipment also comes with specific pointers and tips about your child’s milestones and developmental stages. You also get advice on how to figure out when your child is ready for baby-led weaning.

Allergens and Preferences

All the Yumi baby purees and finger foods are vegetarian and vegan-friendly meals that are free from allergens from the Big Eight (eggs, milk, peanuts, tree nuts, crustacean shellfish, fish, wheat, and soy).

Does Yumi Baby Food Have Preservatives?

No. Yumi claims that their baby foods are free from preservatives.

Is Yumi Safe Baby Food?

Yumi partners with trusted farms that are USDA Certified Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified to prepare fresh food and healthy meals that can be safe for your baby. In addition, tests for heavy metals are regularly run on both ingredients and finished products. Yumi products don’t contain ingredients from the Big Eight. But the items are produced in a facility that also processes peanuts. While they promise to make sure that all baby foods are safe, there’s always a possibility of cross-contamination with peanuts. All Yumi baby food products may be free from:

  • Additives
  • Added sugars
  • Artificial flavors
  • Fillers
  • Food coloring
  • Hormones
  • Heavy metals
  • Gluten
  • GMOs (genetically modified organisms).
  • Preservatives

All products are prepared each week with fresh, whole, and organic ingredients using meal preparation methods that you might use at home: steaming, boiling, and baking. The baby foods are prepared in small batches and use light processing that can kill bacteria while keeping the flavor and nutrients.

Food-Safe Containers

Meals are placed in 4-oz reusable and recyclable jars that are free from BPS and BPA. These two are toxic chemicals used in the manufacturing of food containers: BPA (Bisphenol-A) is used for plastics, while BPS (Bisphenol-S) is used for linings in some canned foods and beverages.

How Long Is Yumi Baby Food Good For?

The jars are also color-coded to help you keep track of the meals from any given week. Their baby food should be eaten within 24 hours after opening. Note that meals last seven days in the fridge and two months in the freezer. Take off the seal and write the date you froze the jar before putting it inside the freezer. Once you defrost a jar, it should be served and consumed within 24 hours.

Is Yumi FDA Approved?

There’s no information on Yumi’s website on whether they’re FDA-approved or not.

Yumi Vs. Homemade Food

Yumi can help provide your baby with certified organic food with nutrients needed for different stages of body and brain development. Baby food delivery can be a time-saver for busy or working moms and can also let you introduce a wide variety of food to your baby, especially ones that might not be freshly available in your locality. Pediatricians suggest letting your baby taste different foods to acquaint their palate and instill good eating habits that help them from becoming picky eaters.

What Customers Say

Positive Reviews

Yumi has been a lifesaver for me! I tried Little Spoon at the same time and liked Yumi more because it was less runny. I ran out of ideas and seeing the combinations that Yumi comes in, I’ve been inspired to make my own baby food to supplement my Yumi orders. Baby food is supposed to be a little bland so the baby can taste the ingredients. I’m on level 3 right now and trying to transition to 4. Eventually, when I get more confident with my abilities, I will get off Yumi and do it all myself. Their level 3 jar called “Veggie Burger” also smells like dirt, and I suspect it’s mostly the beets.” – Reviewer on Reddit. “My daughter can not get enough of the sweet potato cheesecake!!! Everything we have tried has been amazing!” – Reviewer on Yumi’s Facebook page. “Yes – my kid loved it. We put it in the freezer and used it as needed. So we didn’t make the shipments as scheduled because we did baby-led feeding and only a bit of purées. (It says not to freeze them, but you totally can, and nothing bad happens at all.) The Yumi purées were incredible, though. Awesome options and seasonal flavors, too. My kid LOVED their “pumpkin pie” flavor.” – Reviewer on Reddit.

Negative Reviews

PSA (public service announcement): Yumi baby food is hot garbage. Let me tell you. Our kid enjoyed MAYBE 3/10 of these packages. 1/10 of them he ate reluctantly, and 6/10 he totally did not want anything to do with. No surprise – the food tasted terrible, even to me, and I honestly think that the mixes were made by non-American grandmothers and robots. The spices were overpowering, the combinations of flavors made no sense, and the ‘bites’ were dried cardboard.” – Reviewer on Reddit. “Just received my first order. For the amount you have to pay to get this subscription, I’m pretty disappointed. It came in such a mess. The jars are sticky. And they all seem watery. The blueberries were chunky/watery. I really expected more of a purée.” – Reviewer on Yumi’s Facebook page. “I tried Yumi thanks to a friend’s code that got me a package for 3$. It was ok for how little I spent, but we only used like half the pots. My son hated 2 of them, one made him super gassy, and we just weren’t that interested in continuing for how expensive it is. I can just buy fruits and veggies and make my own for way less per serving.” – Reviewer on Reddit.

Summary & Recommendation

How to Introduce Your Child to Solid Foods

Babies can start to eat solids when they are four or six months old. But make sure to consult your pediatrician if you’ll start earlier than six months. Begin with the thinner purees from Yumi’s stage one and gradually introduce your baby to stage two purees. Each jar contains one to two servings, depending on how much your baby will eat at this stage. Babies might make faces, spit the food, or only eat small amounts because they only know the taste of breastmilk or formula. But this doesn’t mean that your baby hates the food. Starting on solid foods is a new sensory experience for your baby, and it might take a few more exposures before they begin to recognize and enjoy the new food. After that, you can gradually introduce your baby’s palate to more foods and flavors.

Following the Three-Day Rule or Introducing Variety?

Some pediatricians recommend the Three-Day Rule for introducing solids to your baby to help rule out the causes of potential allergic reactions. Because Yumi food options don’t have allergens from the common ingredients on the Big Eight, they recommend introducing your baby to more varieties of purees.

When to Feed Your Baby

Whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding your baby, Yumi suggests giving your baby solid food about an hour before or after a milk feed. Your baby will have room for solids at this time but isn’t too hungry to be impatient about trying out solid foods. By 10 or 11 months old, your baby may be ready for finger foods. That’s the time to introduce them to the pinchable foods from stage six or the nutrient-dense bites and puffs from stages seven and eight. They can begin following your regular mealtime schedule with time for snacks at this point.
