The FDA doesn’t directly “approve” baby formulas. However, the federal agency regulates these baby products and ensures they follow US regulations. (10)

Ingredients & Formula Building Blocks

Milk Protein Content & Ratio

Whey-To-Casein Ratio (Breastmilk Vs. Formula)

Breast milk’s composition varies, depending on your baby’s needs.

For example, it doesn’t have a fixed whey-to-casein ratio (proteins in milk). This ratio is around 80-20 or 70-30 at early lactation, then changes to around 50-50 at later lactation. (11)

Bobbie’s flagship milk-based formula has a ratio of 60% whey and 40% casein. The gentle formula uses 100% broken-down (also called “partially hydrolyzed”) whey proteins.

Cow’s milk has a whey-to-casein ratio of around 18-82. So, manufacturers must process it to be as close to human milk as possible. (11)

Things To Know About Whey

Whey comprises the liquid that remains when milk is curdled. It’s easier to digest. (11)

So, your baby’s small tummy can easily digest formula with more whey than casein. (11)

About 10% of whey is comprised of whey proteins with the following ratio: (12)

Things To Know About Casein

Casein protein makes up about 80% of cow’s milk. It’s more dense than whey and turns into solids or curds when milk is curdled. (11)

It’s digested slower than whey, so having too much casein in your baby’s formula can lead to constipation. (11)

Casein carries calcium and phosphate. (12)

This milk protein can be further subdivided into A1 and A2 groups. Most formulas are made of A1 milk. (13)

Some studies showed that A1 proteins are more likely to cause gas, diarrhea, and bloating than A2 milk proteins. A2 milk proteins might also help improve memory and accuracy more than A1 milk. (13)

That’s why some manufacturers, including Abbott, also created specialty formulas with only A2 milk.

Carbohydrate Content & Source

Human milk has lactose as its primary carbohydrate. (11)

European formulas (and the European-inspired Bobbie) use lactose as the carbohydrate source to be as close as possible to breast milk. They are free from added sugars.

American formulas aren’t required to use lactose, and many Similac products are lactose-free because they’re especially formulated for babies with lactose intolerance and sensitive tummies.

Fat Content & Source

Dietary fats and essential fatty acids in milk are important for brain development. They help your baby’s body absorb fat-soluble vitamins (examples include vitamins A, D, E, and K). (11)

Breast milk contains around 40-50% of fats. Cow’s milk, which is used in making baby formulas, has a different composition and doesn’t provide all the fats or essential fatty acids your little one needs. That’s why manufacturers supplement baby formula products with various oils. (4)(14)

Common fats or oils used in formula production include highly processed vegetable oils such as those made from sunflower, safflower, coconut, palm, and canola (or rapeseed). However, these oils can be highly inflammatory and might contain harmful fats. (2)(3)(4)

Use Of Canola Oil

Bobbie and Similac both use canola and other highly processed oils in their formulas.

However, Bobbie offers a cleaner alternative by using an organic expeller-pressed fat blend. This plant-based blend meets the fat requirements for formulas using organic coconut, sunflower, safflower, or canola oils.

Do Bobbie & Similac Formulas Have Palm Oil?

Palm oil is also another commonly used ingredient in many baby formulas. It has a fatty acid profile comparable to that of human breast milk. Sadly, studies have also shown that it can lead to the following: (1)(15)

Reduced calcium absorption
Reduced fat absorption
Compromised bone tissues through increased bone mineralization
Increased risk of harder stool consistency or constipation

According to a 2020 Nutrients journal review, the differences in the fatty acid positions on the triacylglycerides of palm oil and human breast milk might be the reason for the issues in fat absorption.

Thankfully, both Bobbie and Similac formulas are free from palm oil.

Prebiotic & Probiotic Content

Probiotics are good bacteria that help promote digestion and a healthier immune system. Prebiotics are fibers that also improve digestion and are considered food for probiotics to thrive.

Bobbie doesn’t use probiotics or prebiotics

Other Important Ingredients

Iron Content

The FDA requires that formulas have at least 1 mg iron per 100 calories. Those that don’t must include warnings on their label for the possible need for iron supplementation. (16)

Most Similac formulas have 1.8 mg iron per 100 calories.

Bobbie formulas have a lower iron content (1.2 mg iron per 100 calories) because they follow European guidelines that limit formulas to a maximum of 1.3 mg iron per 100 calories. (17)

DHA Content

Many formula companies add DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) to their products because this omega-3 fatty acid is important for eye development and brain health.

While conventional DHAs often use the toxic “processing aid” called hexane, Bobbie uses water extraction and sources their omega-3 DHA from sea algae. (9)

The same goes for ARA (arachidonic acid), an omega-6 fatty acid.

Soy Content

Bobbie formulas are soy-free, while many Similac products have soy and/or soy oil.

Soy is considered a common allergen. It can also cause stomach upset, vomiting, gas, bloating, nausea, and diarrhea or constipation due to its lectin content. (18)

Soy allergy is often due to soy proteins. The manufacturing process to make soy oil removes soy proteins. Technically, soy oil can be declared as “soy-free” because it’s not believed to trigger an allergic reaction. (19)
