FAQs

What’s Cronobacter?

According to the CDC (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), Cronobacter sakazakii is a type of bacteria that’s commonly found in the environment. It can live on dry foods, including powdered milk, infant formula, starches, and herbal teas. (5)

The same bacteria was involved in the massive Similac recall, which contributed to the formula shortage in 2022.

This bacteria doesn’t usually affect most people, the FDA explains. (2)

However, it can especially pose a threat to infants: (2)

  • Premature babies
  • Infants younger than two months of age
  • Babies with weakened immune systems

Watch out for the following: (2)(5)

  • Fever
  • Poor feeding
  • Excessive crying
  • Low energy
  • Other serious symptoms, including breathing difficulties, seizures, or even death

According to the CDC, babies younger than two months are more likely to develop meningitis (swelling of the linings surrounding the spinal cord and the brain). (5)
