UPPAbaby All-Terrain RIDGE Jogging Strollers were recalled in September 2022 after the company received a report of a child’s fingertip accidentally being amputated by the stroller’s rear disc brake. (1)(2)

UPPAbaby All-Terrain Ridge Stroller Recall Information

On September 01, 2022, UPPAbaby and the CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product SCommission) announced the recall of UPPAbaby All-Terrain RIDGE Jogging Strollers due to an amputation hazard. (1)(2)

The tip of a child’s finger was accidentally amputated by the rear disc brake. The kid wasn’t riding the stroller at the time. (2)

According to the recall advisory, the stroller’s rear disc brakes can cause laceration or amputation if a non-occupant child’s fingertip is caught in their openings while the stroller is in use. (2)(3)

The voluntary recall advisory was issued after the firm received one reported incident that resulted in this fingertip amputation.

Around 14,400 strollers imported by Monahan Products LLC, d/b/a UPPAbaby, of Rockland, Massachusetts, are included in this recall. (1)

The firm issued the following statement in the recall advisory: (1)

“Our top priority at UPPAbaby is the safety of children. We conduct extensive testing to ensure UPPAbaby products meet all global industry and regulatory standards. Despite passing all tests and meeting all standards, UPPAbaby received one report about the all-terrain RIDGE stroller.

We take all product inquiries very seriously. Based on one consumer report to us, we believe the injury is likely due to consumer misuse. The RIDGE’s disc brakes have openings that can cause amputation or laceration if a non-occupant child’s fingertip gets caught in the openings while the stroller is in use.”

How To Identify The Recalled UPPAbaby All-Terrain Ridge Strollers

This recall involves UPPAbaby all-terrain RIDGE jogging strollers. These products have the following: (1)

Disc hand brake system
Adjustable handlebar with a wrist strap
Extendable canopy with a zipper pocket and mesh window
The brand name “UPPAbaby” is printed on the front, while the product name “RIDGE” is printed on the side of the stroller frame.
Black frame and black tires
Fabric color options: charcoal (“JAKE”), white (“BRYCE”), or slate blue (“REGGIE”)

You can find the model number “1401-RDG-US” printed on the left side of the stroller frame located above the rear wheel of the stroller. (1)

The serial numbers of the recalled products start with “1401RDGUS.” You can find the codes on the right side of the stroller frame above the stroller’s rear wheel. (1)

Can Your Kids Still Use The Recalled UPPAbaby All-Terrain Ridge Strollers If These Look Alright?

According to the recall advisory, the disc brakes could cause injury to a non-occupant child whose fingers might get caught in the openings.

Although this could mean that the stroller is safe for the occupant child, who isn’t likely to get injured by these brakes, it’s still best to stop using the product until your free replacement brake discs are installed in the stroller.

UPPAbaby RumbleSeat Adapter Recall Information

On June 30, 2021, UPPAbaby adapters included with RumbleSeats (the second seat in UPPAbaby convertible strollers) were recalled because they could detach and pose a fall hazard to a child in the seat. (4)

Around 86,000 of the RumbleSeat accessory adapters, designed to attach the UPPAbaby RumbleSeat to the strollers, were included in this recall. (4)

UPPAbaby received 135 reports of incidents involving adapter detachments, including 77 incidents that resulted in scrapes, bumps, and broken noses. (4)

How To Identify Recalled UPPAbaby RumbleSeats

The recalled RumbleSeat accessories were produced between September 2014 and July 2019. These were sold in juvenile specialty stores for $180 to $200 from October 2014 through July 2019. (5)

Can Your Kids Still Use Recalled RumbleSeats If These Look Alright?

The main strollers are still safe to use while waiting for the replacement parts. However, don’t use the RumbleSeat accessories until you receive the replacement adapters.

UPPAbaby Recall 2020

UPPAbaby Knox Convertible Child Seat Recall Information

On July 2, 2021, the ODI (Office of Defects Investigation) of the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) launched another investigation (action number PE21015) over the scope of the voluntary recall made on the 2020 UPPAbaby Knox Convertible Child Seat the previous year. (6)

No official recall announcement was issued by UPPAbaby or government agencies like the NHTSA and CPSC.

Instead, the NHTSA stated that they received manufacturer communication sent to 2020 UPPAbaby Knox owners. This letter alerted the customers that the seats can exhibit lateral movement when used in the rear-facing position, even with secured installation. (6)

The communication reportedly instructed the car seat owners to stop using these products immediately. (6)

According to the NHTSA’s statement, this communication told owners that if they continue to use the car seats, it will be at their own risk. (6)

Another letter was sent to the car seat owners, providing instructions on how to disable the seats from further use and how they can process the monetary refund for the seats. The car seat owners can also receive a $50 incentive for doing this. (6)

No fatalities have been reported.

In an earlier investigation (action number AQ21001) about the 2020 UPPAbaby Knox Convertible Child Seat launched on February 23, 2021, the NHTSA’s ODI explained that they received a public report about the defective restraint in April 2020. (6)

Their investigation showed that UPPAbaby claimed it didn’t have information to report about the issue.

After receiving communication from UPPAbaby on October 30, 2020, with documentation about customer complaints they received about the Knox, the NHTSA reported: (6)

“Upon review of the complaints, UPPAbaby may have failed to report injuries, foreign recalls, consumer complaints, and manufacturer communications under 49 U.S.C. § 30166 and 49 C.F.R. Part 579.

To date, UPPAbaby either failed to report and/or untimely reported death or injury incidents, consumer complaints, manufacturer communications, and foreign recalls reports under 49 C.F.R. Part 579.”

The NHTSA received a report from UPPAbaby that as of late 12/18/2020, they’ve contacted 100% of the purchasers of the 1,808 Knox Convertible Child Seats they had produced. However, as many as 411 seats had not been returned yet. (6)

No. According to the NHTSA, UPPAbaby informed them and the verified purchasers that the car seats in question (some 2020 models only) could exhibit lateral movement even with secured installation. (6)

It can be dangerous to let your child use these defective car seats.

The issue on the 2020 model has been fixed, and UPPAbaby continues to sell KNOX on its official website and through retailers. No further safety alerts have been reported.

UPPAbaby G-LITE and UPPAbaby G-LUXE umbrella strollers were recalled over a defective opening and closing mechanism found in the rear of the strollers. The faulty mechanism can cause the stroller to fold even while your child is still inside. (8)
