Why Are Quaker Granola Bars Being Recalled?

On December 15, 2023, The Quaker Oats Company announced the massive recall of over 90 different granola bars and cereals over possible contamination with Salmonella (a type of bacteria). (see list of affected products below) (1)(2)

Salmonella infection can lead to serious illness, which is sometimes fatal, in young children, people with a weakened immune system (no matter their age), and elderly or frail people. (1)(3)

Even healthy children and adults with Salmonella infection can experience the following symptoms: (1)(3)

  • Diarrhea (can be bloody)
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain, including painful cramps
  • Nausea
  • Headache

 

Sometimes, Salmonella infection can lead to life-threatening complications such as severe diarrhea, which requires immediate medical attention. (1)(3)

It can also cause severe illnesses, including endocarditis (inflammation of the inner lining in the heart chambers and their valves), arterial infections, and infected aneurysm (infection of the arterial wall). (1)(3)

Thankfully, there have been no reports of illnesses, injuries, or deaths relating to this Quaker granola recall as of writing. (1)

No. Because Salmonella are microscopic organisms, you can’t tell if your products are contaminated or not just by looking at them. Stop using these recalled Quaker granola products immediately to keep you and your family safe.

 

Are Quaker Chewy Granola Bars Unhealthy?

Quaker Chewy and Big Chewy products can be unhealthy because they contain 5g of added sugars per serving (one bar) and other components (note that corn syrup is also a sugary ingredient).
