Overview
Car seats save lives – and getting the correct one for your toddler is essential.
Data from the CDC (US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) shows that car seats can reduce injury risks for children by as much as 71-82%. (1)
Did you know that as many as 38% of car crash deaths in the US involved children who weren’t buckled up? That’s a significant safety concern. (1)
But car seats can be costly. According to Consumer Reports, the average price in 2024 is $250 for brand-new convertible car seats. It’s important to choose the right one in terms of safety, durability, and ease of use. (2)
So, are convertible car seats better than individual car seats? What’s the difference between the two? Are there car seats made especially for toddlers, and at what age should your child use them? What about all-in-one seats with booster options?
What factors should you consider when choosing your toddler’s ideal car seat? How long should your kiddo use these car seats?
Keep reading below to find answers to your questions.
Types Of Car Seats & When To Use Them
The following are the main different types of car seats and some expert recommendations on when to use them:
- Infant Car Seats: Birth to one year old
- Rear-Facing Car Seats: Birth to three years old
- Forward-Facing Harness Seats: 1-7 years old
- Convertible (rear-facing & forward-facing car seats): Birth or 1 year to 7 years old
- All-In-One Car Seats (convertible + booster): Birth to 12 years old
- Booster Car Seats (e.g., backless, high back, and/or belt-positioning): 4-12 years old
While there are infant car seats, no products are specifically designed for toddlers. The good news is that most car seats are suitable for toddlers, except for the infant (for babies) and booster (for older kids) seats.
IMPORTANT: Car seat age, height, and weight limits can vary. Always check the one you have for its specific limits (minimum or maximum) capacity.
Getting Individual Seats Vs. Convertible Or All-In-One Option
Something To Fit Your Budget
Convertible and all-in-one car seats usually cost more because they have more features and a wider range than individual options. The upside is that you can use them for longer.
Getting individual seats (such as an infant car seat) might be more cost-effective in the short term. When the time comes, you can get the seat for the next age range.
Getting The Best Value For Money
Depending on the actual product, convertible and all-in-one car seats are usually appropriate for babies or toddlers up to big kids. So, even if they cost more than individual seats, they might offer the best bang for your buck and long-term value.

Product Recall
There hasn’t been any official UPPAbaby recall issued for the Knox car seat.
However, UPPAbaby had messaged registered buyers of the UPPAbaby Knox Convertible Child seat (2020 model only) to stop using the affected products due to a possible design or manufacturing defect. (3)
According to an NHTSA investigation (by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), the manufacturer warned their buyers that it would be at their own risk if they continued using the affected car seats. (3)
The NHTSA’s investigation also uncovered a second letter reportedly sent by UPPAbaby to affected consumers. It supposedly had instructions on how consumers can: (3)
- Disable the car seat to prevent further use
- Process a monetary refund plus an incentive worth $50 for their possibly defective seat
Thankfully, no injuries or fatalities were reported for this UPPAbaby Knox issue. (3)
Cons & Drawbacks
- The 2020 model reportedly had a defect, but there hasn’t been an official recall for the product (3)
- Some complaints on customer reviews that the fabric shrunk after cleaning (even after following the manufacturer’s instructions)
- Can be pricey

“The included inserts really helped make the seat custom fit to my daughter. She was snug and comfortable when younger, and as she grew, removing them made the seat more spacious, and adjusting the headrest to match her height was easy…” – Reviewer on UPPAbaby
Negative Reviews
“After removing the cover to clean one time according to the manufacturer instructions, the upholstery never refit. This is terrible if your child ever stains it, which all children are likely to do.” – Reviewer on UPPAbaby

Product Recall
In December 2021, Clek Inc. recalled several lots of the Clek Foonf Convertible Car Seat over a possible safety defect. The recall also included the Clek Fllo Car Seat. (4)
The seats passed the standard safety tests and were still considered safe. They’re also able to protect kids in a crash. However, a gap at the crotch buckle opening can allow little fingers to reach and pick the foam material inside the seat, which can pose choking risks if a child removes a piece and puts it in their mouth. (4)
These are the affected model codes of the recalled Clek Foonf Convertible Car Seats, with manufacturing dates from 2012/12/03 to 2021/05/20: (4)
- FO12
- FO14
- FO15
- FO16
- FO17
- FO18
- FO19
Clek clarifies that these recalled car seats are still safe to use. They sent a plastic kit to let the affected buyers fix the safety issue. The safety issue didn’t affect the car seat’s functionality. (4)
However, the company advised affected consumers to check the crotch buckle opening for signs of damage (e.g., foam pieces detached from the seat) while waiting for the mailed repair kit to arrive. (4)
Cons & Drawbacks
- It had a recall over a potential safety issue
- Can be pricey (second most expensive convertible on this list)
- Some customer complaints about the car seat being too big or too tall to fit their vehicle
What Customers Say
Positive Reviews
“Really like the seat so far. The baby is so comfortable, the seat is very sturdy and well-made. I also love how narrow the seat is which allows us to have great space in the back seat. Installation was quite easy too. So far I’m very pleased!” – Reviewer on Clek
Negative Reviews
“Too big, doesn’t fit in a normal car. It’s way too big/tall, doesn’t sit upright enough, must put passenger seat all the way forward to use. Mid size SUV, still not a good fit.” – Reviewer on Clek

“The steel frame adds some heft to it and it FEELS structurally sound. If you’ve installed a car seat before, it’s pretty easy to figure out the latch system it uses; A tether up top that secures it behind the seat and a lateral belt that you snake through the appropriate holes in the bottom/back and secure the buckles with a snap to the car’s latch system on either side.” – Reviewer on Amazon
Negative Reviews
“…This takes up a lot of precious space. So much that the front seats cannot be placed back far enough to be comfortable to drive. These things are also very sharp and hard and likely to tear or puncture leather if not using some type of protective pad.” – Reviewer on Amazon

Product Recall
- None
There have been recalls on Maxi Cosi infant car seats, including one for the older “Pria” models (“Pria 70”, “Pria 85,” & Pria 85 Max”). However, these recalls didn’t include the Maxi Cosi Pria 3-in-1 convertible and the Maxi Cosi Pria All-in-One car seat. (6)(7)
The August 2021 recall on the older Pria models, with production years from 2019 to 2021, was done over possible design defects that can lead to safety concerns. When installed in the forward-facing position and only secured using the vehicle’s lap belt (without the top tether), the seat might not adequately protect the child from head injuries in a crash. (6)
Dorel Juvenile Group, Inc. recalled several models from different car seat brands, including Maxi Cosi and Safety 1st, because their self-retracting lower anchor systems failed to meet the safety standards. (7)
Like the previous Maxi Cosi recall, the 3-in-1 and all-in-one models are also excluded. (7)
Cons & Drawbacks
- Some customer complaints over quality issues, such as the seat covers getting ripped or torn even after only a few months of use
What Customers Say
Positive Reviews
“I love this car seat! My older son has one and I have been able to use it since he was seven months old and he is now three. It’s fairly easy to take in and out. It’s not too heavy and it’s very comfortable for my son. It’s also a machine washable, which can really come in handy. “ – Reviewer on Amazon
Negative Reviews
“Not happy with this purchase. The car seat smelled terrible. The bottom in the head rest broke off during the first wash and I can barely tighten the seat past a certain point.” – Reviewer on Target

Safety Reminders When Using Toddler Car Seats
Choose The Most Suitable Seat For Your Little One (Double-Check The Limits)
When installed and used properly, car seats can protect your child against various impact forces during a crash.
Although these products are designed to meet safety standards, some provide better protection than others. However, it’s essential to check that your kiddo is using the right car seat to provide them with the best protection — be sure to double-check the limits.
For example, babies must always be placed inside an infant car seat in rear-facing mode. You can also place your baby in a convertible or all-in-one car seat, but use the infant inserts provided.
When your baby turns one year old or outgrows the infant car seat’s limit, get a car seat suitable for toddlers. Note that boosters are only suitable for kids who are 4+ years old.
Choose The Right Fit For Your Vehicle & Needs
In some car seat reviews, frustrated parents complained that the products were too big or too small for their vehicles. Others complained about their child having less legroom in the product than other car seats. These can be prevented by checking the car seat’s dimensions before buying one.
If you need or want to fit three car seats in a row, check if your vehicle allows this configuration. Generally, most full-sized sedans and wide vehicles (e.g., SUVs or minivans) can fit three seats in the back row (or middle row for a three-row vehicle).
However, some vehicles don’t have bench-like flat seats (they might have protruding or bulkier middle sections), making it challenging to install three car seats in the same row.
Car seats with a 19” or less width are considered “narrow” and ideal for a three-in-a-row configuration. However, you might still need to check all the car seat’s dimensions and designs (some are bulkier on the top and sides) to ensure they all fit together.
Install The Car Seat Correctly & Regularly Check The Installation
Proper seat installation is essential to ensure that the product can provide optimal protection for your child, no matter the situation.
We recommend checking the installation guides and double-checking the connections to secure the car seat in place.
Also, it’s important to regularly check if your car seat’s installation remains secured over time. If possible, check before each use and conduct a daily or weekly check to be sure.
Keep Your Child In The Rear-Facing Seat For As Long Safely Possible
The CDC recommends using the right type of child vehicle restraint and keeping your kids in the rear-facing configuration for as long as safely possible (until they reach the maximum limits). (1)
Is It Okay To Wash Toddler Car Seats?
Yes, but only if the manufacturer recommends it. (see below)
Follow The Instructions On Care, Use, & Maintenance Of The Car Seat
Some car seats have removable, machine-washable covers, while others may only be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
Fabrics react to water and heat in different ways. Some fabrics might shrink or get ripped easily, especially when heated in the dryer.
It’s important to check the care and maintenance guide for your child’s car seats because the guidelines can vary even among the same brand.
Replacing Car Seats After An Accident
A car seat’s functionality or integrity may be compromised after an accident. It might no longer provide adequate protection to your child in the event of another incident. (8)
The NHTSA recommends replacing any car seat involved in a moderate and/or severe crash, even if it looks fine. However, car seats don’t have to be replaced after a minor crash if all of these situations apply: (8)
- The door nearest the car seat wasn’t damaged.
- The airbags (if the vehicle has them) didn’t deploy during the crash.
- The car was driven away from the crash site.
- None of the vehicle’s passengers were injured in the crash.
- There isn’t any visible damage to the car seat.
Note, however, that different car seat companies have varied policies on whether their products need to be replaced after an accident.
While car seat companies’ warranty policies don’t usually cover accidents, the brand might recommend replacement, even if the product was only involved in a minor accident. Policies vary, so checking with your car seat manufacturer is ideal.
Here are some accident replacement policies from car seat brands:
- UPPAbaby – Follow NHTSA guidelines, but call your insurance company to help decide on whether it’s ideal to replace even after a minor accident (source: reply to Motherhood Community’s email inquiry)
- Nuna – No specific guidelines, but recommends following the NHTSA guidelines (source: reply to Motherhood Community’s email inquiry)
- Graco – Replace after any accident (9)
- Britax – Follow NHTSA guidelines (10)
- Maxi-Cosi – Offers a new car seat to replace one (their product) involved in an accident (11)
- Chicco – Replace after any accident (12)
- Baby Jogger – Replace after any accident (13)
- Baby Trend – Replace after any accident (14)
- Clek – Replace after any accident (15)
- Cosco – Replace after any accident (16)
- Safety 1st – Replace after any accident (17)
- Evenflo – Offers a new car seat to replace one involved in an accident; applies to products with the Evenflo Gold Lifetime Warranty (18)
- Cybex – Replace after any accident (19)
- Peg Perego – Might need to be replaced after any accident; call the brand’s customer service for verification (20)
- Diono – Follow NHTSA guidelines; the brand offers a new car seat to replace one (their product) involved in an accident (21)
Some insurance companies cover car seat replacement after an accident. Check with yours before getting a new one.
Is It Ok To Buy A Second-Hand Car Seat?
Buying a second-hand car seat isn’t a good idea because you can’t always tell whether the product is still safe for use. Sometimes, it might be hard to tell whether the car seat has been involved in a moderate and/or severe crash.
How To Properly Dispose Used Car Seats
Watch out for Target’s car seat trade-in program, usually scheduled twice yearly: around April and September. (22)
During these special events, you can trade in any used car seats, including recalled or expired ones, to get coupons for up to 20% off (for online and in-store purchases). (22)
You can use these coupons to buy a new car seat or other baby gear within a limited period, including the following: (22)
- High chairs
- Strollers
- Playards
- Bouncers

Factors To Help You Choose The Ideal Toddler Car Seat
Product Safety
Car seat safety features must always be the priority when choosing the most suitable restraint for your little one. Here are some safety tips to consider:
Safety Ratings & Field Testing
Checking Safety Test Ratings
The NHTSA offers options for parents, caregivers, and other interested parties to check for a car seat’s safety rating based on its ease of installation and use, capacity to secure a child, and proper labeling. (24)
You can search for a car seat’s ratings using this link (click on “SEARCH BRANDS”): nhtsa.gov/vehicle-safety/car-seats-and-booster-seats#find-the-right-car-seat-find–compare-seats
Crash Test Results Can Vary & May Not Be Perfect
The NHTSA clarifies that car seats must pass the standards and tests set by FMVSS No. 213 for Child Restraint Systems. However, they don’t test car seats with simulated crashes because the results can vary based on different situations. (24)
Based on data analysis, the NHTSA believes that a crash-based rating program might be difficult to under and not practicable to most consumers. (24)
That’s why they rate the car seats based on their installation and capacity to restrain a child in any given situation.
Don’t Just Rely On Crash Test Ratings
Yes, some car seats are marketed with crash test ratings. However, the NHTSA explains that a higher rating doesn’t always mean a car seat is safer or superior to others with a lower rating.
According to the NHTSA, a car seat is more effective if it meets the following criteria: (24)
- The car seat is correctly installed in a vehicle
- The child is correctly secured in the car seat or restraint
Possibility Of Extended Rear-Facing Use
Car seats have different designs and age, weight, or height limits. Because the CDC and NHTSA recommend keeping your child in a rear-facing car seat position for as long as possible (it’s considered safer), consider choosing products designed for this purpose.
Some car seats have adjustable leg extenders and other features that make them suitable for extended rear-facing use.
Check For Product Recalls
- Cybex recall (2023)

- Safety 1st recalls (2023)
- Baby Trend stroller & car seat recalls (2022)
- UPPAbaby stroller & car seat recalls (2022)

If you have any unused car seats (including recalled or expired units), consider swapping them for a 20% discount coupon at the Target Car Seat Trade-In Program (a 2-week event usually scheduled around April and September). You can use this discount coupon for various baby essentials (in-store or online purchases).
GREENGUARD GOLD Certification
GREENGUARD GOLD Certified products have low chemical emissions, including VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and other potentially toxic or harmful chemicals.
These products might cost more than regular car seats without certification, but they’re certified to be safer for little ones.
You can also read and bookmark Motherhood Community’s Health and Safety Philosophy to learn about possibly toxic chemicals in baby products and how to avoid or reduce your baby’s exposure.
Car Seats Can Expire Or Get Damaged
Car seats must be free from damage, whether from a car crash or wear and tear. For peace of mind, consider choosing a car seat with a longer expiration period.
Features & Convertibility
Consider what features you want to have in your child’s car seat. Some of these include:
- Possible safety features (e.g., side impact protection, stability support, reinforced frame, etc.)
- Installation features (e.g., seat belt guide, color indicators, leveling bubbles, etc.)
- Convertibility (i.e., rear-facing, front-facing, and/or booster seat mode)
- Minimum and maximum weight and height limits
- Removable and machine-washable covers
- Extra features (e.g., cup holders, storage pockets, harness storage, etc.)
- Warranty
- Seat expiry
If you plan on using a car seat protector, check if the brand’s manufacturer allows or recommends them. Many car seat manufacturers don’t recommend using seat protectors, which can void your warranty or affect accident insurance claims.
Product Weight & Dimensions
Consider the size of your vehicle, the seat configuration, and your needs versus the car seat’s weight and dimensions. Here are some things to bear in mind:
- Narrower car seats (less than 19” in width) may be better for a three-across configuration in most vehicles (but check your vehicle’s seats for bulky sections that might affect or prevent this configuration)
- Lighter car seats may be ideal if you need to move them between your vehicles regularly
Ease Of Installations & Options Available
The NHTSA, CDC, and Motherhood Community recommend proper installation of your child’s car seats to maximize their safety and comfort.
So, choosing a car seat that’s easy to install is also important. Products with visual installation guides and extra features, such as audible clicks or color indicators, can help ensure they are properly installed.
Consider Customer Reviews
All consumer products, including car seats, look good on paper (especially in ads). However, not all of them live up to their marketing features.
When choosing the right car seat for your kiddos, check the customer reviews section for possible red flags or safety concerns about the product. Some things to look out for:
- Quality concerns (e.g., the cover was easily torn, the straps snapped, the buckles broke easily, etc.)
- Installation concerns (e.g., the product was difficult to install, installation guides weren’t provided, etc.)
- Concerns about using the car seat (e.g., difficult access to the buckles to clip on or release, wobbly seat, etc.)
FAQs
At What Age Do You Switch To A Toddler Car Seat?
The toddler age range begins at one year old. It’s also the ideal age to switch to a toddler seat. However, car seats aren’t usually marketed as “toddler car seats.”
Instead, you can get convertible or all-in-one car seats your toddler can use after they outgrow the infant car seat.
What Car Seats Should A 2-Year-Old Be In?
- Convertible or all-in-one car seats (keep them in the rear-facing position as much as possible, but they can already be in front-facing car seats)
How Long Does A Toddler Have To Ride In A Car Seat?
Toddlers must always ride in a car seat (convertible or all-in-one). They can only use booster seats when they’re at least four years old.
Are More Expensive Car Seats Safer?
Not exactly. Although more expensive car seats can have extra features for your child’s added safety, Consumer Reports and the NHTSA explain that they aren’t guaranteed “safer.” (24)(25)
Mid-range and less expensive car seats are still safe if they’re properly installed and meet other safety requirements (e.g., they haven’t expired or been in a moderate or severe accident, etc.). (24)(25)
Should I Consider Getting A Travel Car Seat?
A portable car seat might be ideal if you travel regularly and want to bring your own. However, it’s best to limit their use for traveling. Use a regular car seat for daily use.
