But first, check out my awesome steak rub recipe!

That’s the Rub!

When it comes to Bar-B-Q, I prefer sweet flavors. Knowing this, my husband whipped up this sweet and savory steak rub and, man oh man, was it ever delicious! Here’s what you need:

Motherhood Community - Thats the Rub1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
1 tsp coffee
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp “Walker & Sons Slap Ya Mama Cajun Seasoning
2 tsp brown sugar

Now combine all your ingredients. (We like to combine them in a mortar and grind them with the pestle while mixing them up to make sure they are good and fine.) Voila! You are ready to start rubbing!

The most important part of rubbing is to make sure you get every inch of your meat covered. Feel around for hidden spots and get the sides too. To properly rub meat, imagine you’re giving a strong massage, knead the meat firmly. If you want, you can go as far as to poke each side of the meat gently with a fork a few dozen times. This opens up opportunities for the rub to penetrate deeper into the meat.

Something to remember about dry rubbing meat is that your meat needs to be protected from direct contact with a hot grill surface, otherwise it will immediately stick and burn. You can either heavily coat the surface of the grill with a neutral-flavored cooking oil, such as olive oil, or lightly oil the grill and the meat just prior to adding it to the grill. We typically do the second because putting too much oil on a hot grill invites flames.

So what are you waiting for?

  1. Great recipe. I never heard of Walker & Sons Slap Ya Mama Cajun Seasoning, but it sounds like a must try. Thanks for the info.

    • There is a hint of coffee flavor Larisha but it actually ends up having a hint of chocolate too. Something about the way the chemicals trick your taste buds. ;p
