Stokke High Chairs: Are They Worth Your Money?

Overview

With options available for just around $20 from IKEA, are Stokke high chairs ($169-$399) worth your money?

For many parents, Stokke high chairs can be worth the extra cash you pay over other brands because these can grow with your baby. These furniture pieces can turn from a high chair into a junior chair with a few modifications.

Instead of the standard footrest in most high chairs, Stokke features wide footplates for your child’s added comfort. Plus, the seats and footplates can be adjusted to suit your little one’s needs.

The adjustable seats can let your child move closer to the dining table during mealtimes or have their own spot in the dining room for eating on their own.

And when your child no longer needs a high chair or booster seat, these Stokke products fully convert to an adult-sized chair. The adjustable design, functionality, and high-quality construction can make these high chairs well worth your money.

But before you add Stokke high chairs to your wishlist or baby registry, you might want to check your options. What are the high chair designs offered by Stokke? Which high chair is the best, and do you need to get accessories?

What Makes Stokke Tripp Trapp Special?

Brings Children Into The Family Table

Whether you’re following the BLW (baby-led weaning) approach or the traditional spoon-feeding method, it can be a great idea to let your baby join mealtimes with the family.

Even when your baby isn’t ready for solids yet, they can join family mealtimes using the Tripp Trapp newborn set.

Good Features & Appearance

The high chairs have a classic Scandinavian design created by Peter Opsvik and come in different colors, including the following:

  • Natural brown
  • Serene pink
  • Storm grey
  • White
  • Moss green
  • Walnut
  • Hazy grey
  • Black

Stokke also offers complimentary engraving so you can personalize your baby’s new high chair with their name.

Highly Functional

Thanks to their adjustability and some extra baby gear or accessories, Stokke high chairs can be used for different purposes. Your baby can join family meals from day one with the newborn set.

Your baby can use the standard high chair configuration when they’re ready for solid foods (usually for 4-6-month-old kids).

The chair also converts to a booster seat and junior chair when your baby no longer needs the tray and harness. It can also convert into a standard chair for adults because you can lower the seat to seat, and the product has a maximum capacity of 300 lbs.

Compact

This high chair has an L-shaped design that ensures a compact appearance with a small footprint. Plus, this design reduces the risks of the high chair becoming a trip hazard in your dining room.

Convenient Bundles

Stokke also offers convenient bundles that include a newborn set, so you don’t have to worry about ordering extra accessories.

Lots Of Accessories

Aside from the standard tray, you can also pick different accessories for your little one’s high chair if you didn’t get the bundles.

You can also pick cushions and covers with cute prints, such as sweet hearts, birds, robots, and stars.

Can Be Used For Years: Good For Toddlers & Big Kids

Stokke prides itself on the durability of its high chairs and assures consumers that its products can last even when your child, the intended user, becomes a teenager or adult.

Because they’re convertible and adjustable, the high chairs can be used for many years.

Product Recall

The Stokke Tripp Trapp high chairs didn’t have a recall, but one of its accessories, the Stokke Tripp Trapp newborn set, was recalled in 2019 for a safety issue. (1)

The recalled newborn sets were produced from August 2018 to March 2019.

According to the recall announcement, there was a risk of consumers assembling the newborn set’s harness incorrectly. The harness points could detach, posing a fall and injury hazard.

The newborn sets included in the recall had the following SKU (stock keeping unit) and UPC (universal product code) numbers: (2)

  • 526301 and 7040355263012
  • 526302 and 7040355263029
  • 526303 and 7040355263036

All the affected products had the same custom code: 94037000.

Affected consumers were instructed to check the codes to see if their product was included in the recall. They could enter the product’s serial number at reclamations.stokke.com/newbornupgrade to check if their item is recalled to get the replacement harness.

Cons Of The Stokke Tripp Trapp

Pricey

With a price range of $289 (without tray) to $399 (with tray), the Stokke Tripp Trapp can be pricier than many other high chairs.

5-Point-Harness Straps Can Be Difficult To Adjust

There are plenty of complaints about the harness straps being difficult to adjust.

Harness Straps Can Be Difficult To Clean

Some parents also claim that the harness straps easily get dirty and can be difficult to clean.

Are Tripp Trapp High Chairs Worth It?

Even though the high chairs are more expensive than other brands, many parents still consider Stokke Tripp Trapp as worth their money because these can be used for many years, with plenty of different configurations and adjustments available.

Is Tripp Trapp Newborn Worth It?

For some parents, the Tripp Trapp newborn can be worth their money because it lets them bring their newborn baby closer to the dining table during mealtimes. However, at $149, it can be a pricey baby gear that you aren’t likely to use for over two months.

Some parents suggest using a stroller with a newborn or bassinet option instead of this baby gear if you want a less expensive option.

Can Your Baby Sleep In Tripp Trapp Newborn?

No. The Tripp Trapp newborn set has a similar design to inclined sleepers, which can be dangerous because they increase your baby’s risk for SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).

What Customers Say

Positive Reviews

It’s easy to put together and take apart, should you need to do that as frequently as we do. Cleanup is relatively easy with just a sweep or vacuum under that table. Very little cleanup of the chair itself is needed aside from cleaning the cushions.” – Reviewer on Amazon.

Negative Reviews

It’s fairly easy to actually click the shoulder straps into the crotch piece, but then in order for the straps to stay on the shoulders you have to thread one of the fabric straps through the tabs of this little plastic piece and it’s rather difficult to get it in and out. Not convenient for strapping baby in or taking her out!” – Reviewer on Stokke’s website.

Cons

  • Unlike the Tripp Trapp, this high chair doesn’t convert into a junior or regular chair.
  • There are some complaints about the plastic material being thin and flimsy.
  • It had a recall over safety issues.

What Customers Say

Positive Reviews

I had my doubts when I assembled it, it seems a bit flimsy. We’ve had zero issues so far. My son is 14 month old (weighs around 26 lbs) and a bit rough on things (he’s crazy). Super easy to take the tray off and clean!” – Reviewer on Amazon.

Negative Reviews

It is so insanely flimsy and much lower to the ground than I expected. The plastic is very thin, and the base doesn’t seem sturdy. I’m surprised it isn’t a tipping hazard (do other people’s toddler sit completely still in their high chairs?!) and I’m nervous to keep my son in the chair while I cook.” – Reviewer on Amazon.

What Customers Say

Positive Reviews

I got this for my 3.5 year old and wish I’d had it her whole life. It looks so beautiful at the table and she’s very comfortable in it. It definitely has helped with her sitting longer at the table.” – Reviewer on Amazon.

Negative Reviews

Our 2 year old uses this chair, but it slides too easily on our hardwoods and she needs us to hold the chair still while she climbs up. It gets so dirty so quickly and I can’t seem to get the back support seam to come together flush.” – Reviewer on Stokke’s website.
