Essential Oils For Foot Pain: Aches, Sore Feet, & Plantar Fasciitis

Updated on

Overview

There are many different causes and sources of foot pain:

  • Sprains
  • Arthritis & joint pain
  • Bunions
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Blisters, calluses, & corns
  • Swelling

In order to experience at least some degree of pain relief, you first have to identify the root cause.

Are your aching feet the result of wearing high heels and being on your feet after a long day?

Or is there swelling and redness in your joints too?

Is your pain chronic and located near the heel at the bottom of your foot?

Then you may have plantar fasciitis, a condition caused by insufficient arch support and wear and tear of the connective tissue (called fascia) on the bottom of your foot.

It’s important to get a doctor’s assessment if your foot pain is chronic and/or progressively getting worse.

Luckily there are several natural options and home remedies that may help alleviate pain and discomfort during the healing process too.

Essential oils (EOs) and their therapeutic application (aromatherapy) have been shown to help manage symptoms like inflammation, swelling, and even athlete’s foot.

EOs are highly concentrated plant extracts that contain medicinal and healing properties known to boost immunity, alleviate stress and anxiety, balance hormones, and support quality sleep.

Many essential oils boast anti-inflammatory properties and are considered pain relievers and even anesthetics, all of which are essential for foot pain relief.

Note: Some EOs like tea tree and eucalyptus may cause skin irritation in sensitive types. Perform a patch test before continued use. Discontinue immediately if you experience any adverse or allergic reactions.

Other helpful EOs:

  • Lemon oil
  • Chamomile oil
  • Marjoram oil
  • Lemongrass oil
  • Bergamot oil
  • Geranium oil
  • Helichrysum oil
  • Wintergreen oil

How to dilute EOs for topical use

Since EOs are potent and concentrated compounds a little goes a long way.

If you’re using them topically (directly on the skin) they need to be diluted in a carrier oil like coconut oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, or almond oil.

For every drop of essential oil use at least 1 teaspoon of carrier oil.

Three effective ways to use EOs for foot pain

Footbath

Also known as foot soaks, this simple therapeutic application involves filling either a tub for your entire body or a bowl or bucket big enough to fully immerse your feet. Add Epsom salt and EOs together with warm water for any muscle pain and soreness.

Foot massage oil

Mix EOs with your choice of carrier oil to create a soothing massage oil to treat the affected area. You can also use a roll-on to apply.

Warm compress –

Fill a bowl or sink with hot or warm water. Add EOs and mix them thoroughly. Soak a towel or cloth in the water, wring it out and then wrap around the affected area. Use until the cloth is cooled and repeat as needed.

DIY Sore Feet Rx Foot Soak

The oils in this soak can help to address pain, soreness, and inflammation.

Use regularly when you’re experiencing foot pain, low back pain, or any type of muscle soreness.

Fill your tub with warm or hot water – this way you can soak your entire body, not just your feet.

Mix 1 cup of Epsom salts with:

  • ¼ cup baking soda
  • 7 drops peppermint oil
  • 7 drops eucalyptus oil
  • 7 drops lavender oil
  • 7 drops frankincense oil

Make sure your entire feet are submerged.
