Time and Relative Dimensions in Groundhog Day

It can be very difficult to explain the passing of time to a young child. Time, in a general sense, can be difficult to understand completely. Its effects over a single day, however, can be easier to explain and illustrate to your child with the aid of the sun and a shadow.

Learning About Shadows - Motherhood CommunityYesterday was Groundhog Day, which inspired us to talk about shadows and how they change throughout the day and in different environments. As the earth revolves around the sun and its cycle continues, it can be fun to mark a space in the earth that your child is aware of and, using a dowel or other stick-like measure device, make a tool for measure the time/shadow. When you first begin, place your measuring tool in the dirt. Show your child the direction the shadow of that object and place a marker in the area where the shadow lays at that time. Leave the area and have some fun with your child elsewhere (Might I suggest playing catch or working with puzzles?) and return about thirty minutes later. At this point in the afternoon you should see a marked difference in the location of your marker and the current location of the shadow. Now you can explain to your child how time passes and show them how the marker moved from the previous time till the present.

There’s an excellent demonstration of a changing shadow at National Schools’ Observatory.

Me and My Shadow

If you and your child enjoy arts and crafts, you can document the experiment with photographs of your child and their shadow throughout the day. Once you’re finished, create a poster board or memory book to look back on over time.

Special thanks to my good friend Judi for today’s activity!

Planning the New Year with Vision Boards!

It’s my first installment of the Geeky Educational Link Up for the new year! In 2015 we will be featuring a different blogger each week. This week we have a for project from Andrea Warren of Waldorf Salad and Cottage Fries!

At the beginning of the year each of us creates our very own personal Vision Board. This visual representation helps us to begin to pull things from our external environment that will enable us to realize our dreams & goals for the New Year. If you’re looking for a NEW creative way to display all of those New Year’s Resolutions while getting your kids involved in the process too; stop by Waldorf Salad & Cottage Fries today for detailed instructions on how to create your own Vision Boards. The kids will love it too!!

I think vision boards are so exciting. I have a tendency to plan, plan, plan so much it becomes almost like daydreaming. My vision board help me narrow my focus and I add not just the overall goal but the little things that will help me reach that goal.

Read more about creating vision boards for the new year at Waldorf Salad and Cottage Fries.

Getting Started with Machine Embroidery

I post a lot about the geeky designs we create at Appliqué Geek. Sometimes people make their way to our website after doing an Internet search for something particularly geeky and fall in love with our adorkable designs only to become terribly disappointed when they realize that they would need an embroidery machine to be able to use our designs. Perhaps this is you and you are ready to see what machine applique is all about. Or perhaps you arrived on this page after doing an Internet search for “learn to do machine applique.” Whatever brought you here, we are happy to help!

Machine embroidery and machine applique can be a fun hobby or a great way to make a little extra money and it doesn’t take much to get started. First you need a computerized sewing machine that can read design files.

The Brother SE400 has a 4×4 hoop, 67 Built-in Stitches, 70 Built-in Designs, and 5 Lettering Fonts.

The SINGER Futura XL-400 has 2 Hoops, 125 Embroidery Designs, 5 Monogramming Fonts.

The Janome Memory Craft 200E has

Those are excellent starter machines. If you have the chance, you should stop into a Joanns or your local sewing shop to give them a test drive!

Once you have your machine picked out, you’ll need supplies. At a minimum, you need stabilizer, embroidery thread, fine scissors, and, of course, fabric to stitch on.

Stabilizer

There are three types of stabilizer that you will find yourself reaching for most often. They are Water Soluble Stabilizer (often just referred to as solvy or WSS), tear away or self-adhesive tear away, and cut away.

Sulky 12-Inch by 9-Yard Solvy Water Soluble Stabilizer Roll

Exquisite Medium Weight (1.8 oz) Tearaway Embroidery Backing 20″ X 50 Yard Roll

Sulky Sticky Self-Adhesive Tear-Away Stabilizer Roll

Cut Away – Machine Embroidery Stabilizer Backing – Medium Weight 2.5oz – 12″x20YD Roll

I started with rolls of stabilizer but now find myself buying pre-cut instead:

Thread

This set of 40 Spools of Polyester Embroidery Machine Thread in Bright and Beautiful Colors is an excellent way to get started.

You’ll also need plenty of bobbin thread. You can either buy large spools and wind your own bobbin or buy pre-wound bobbins. If you go with pre-wound bobbins, make sure you get the correct size for your machine. The most popular sizes are A and L but check your instruction manual to be sure.

White Embroidery Bobbin Thread, 5,000 Meter Cone by SMB Always

144 Prewound Bobbins for Brother Embroidery Machine Size A (156)

144 White Pre-wound L-Style Plastic Bobbins for Embroidery Machines

Scissors

One last note, some people prefer to spray their stabilizer with temporary adhesive spray before laying down their fabric. Here’s a great spray to use for that:

Sulky 4.23-Ounce Temporary Spray Adhesive

There you have all the supplies you need to get started. Stay tuned for an article on choosing the best stabilizer for your project!

Continuing My Family Tradition with Canon from Best Buy

The reviewer has been compensated in the form of a Best Buy Gift Card and/or received the product/service at a reduced price or for free.

Canon Holiday ImageI come from a long line of Canon folks. I remember my Moms 35mm hanging around her neck when I was growing up. She said my Grandpa has used a Canon too. When I bought my first real camera, I went right for the Canons. And when my Mom and I both went digital, we got matching Canon EOS 30Ds from Best Buy. Well it’s almost time to upgrade once again and I have my eye on the Canon EOS Rebel T5i.

Canon Holiday Image 2One of my favorite features is the 3″ vari-angle touch screen. My previous Canon EOS had manual controls and I find the touch screen simplifies navigation. I don’t know if you all remember the thumb-wheel navigation of the old EOS models, but these new models are a dream comparatively. It’s not that the old ones were bad, so much as the new interface is so much faster and streamlined. Technology has come a long way and it’s nice to see how far Canon has advanced with its EOS camera interface over the years.

It’s still just on my wish list for now (hint, hint husband!) but I love that I can walk into Best Buy and give each camera a test drive to help me decide which one to buy. Best Buy is like a home away from home where I can research, try, and then purchase any gadget I need!

Unlike my previous EOS, the Rebel T5i records full Hollywood caliber HD video as well as vivid, crystal-clear images. Plus it has continuous autofocus while taking HD video. I use my smart phone right now and I find it very frustrating when I move from something near in one light to far in another and the picture goes out of focus. It’s the 18.0-megapixel CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 5 image processor that make all the difference in the Canon EOS Rebel T5i!

Right now, you can save $150 on the Canon EOS Rebel T5i at Best Buy*. Visit Best Buy to learn more. *offer valid 12/7-12/20
