I’m rallying to improve birth because there is absolutely no excuse for the infant mortality rate in the USA to be so high. In 2008, the United States ranked 27th in infant mortality among the 30 countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.
What people don’t realize is that no one ever sat down in the 1950s or 1980s and said, ‘OK, let’s figure out all the best birth practices and just use those!’ or, ‘Let’s get all the science together and apply it to maternity care!’ No. At no point did we wipe the slate clean and start over from a scientific standpoint — or from the standpoint of what’s best for moms and babies. The reality is, most American maternity care started with, literally, experiments on unknowing women, and has evolved through Twilight Sleep and procedures done without consent into what we know today: a really big, really profitable business. But today, much like the 1970s, women are saying, “Wait! We want to ‘do birth’ instead having it ‘done to’ us!” Let’s do it!!!! (https://www.facebook.com/ImprovingBirth/posts/529779143762245)
