I was so excited when our new reward chart arrived a few weeks ago. My Big Star Chart is a toddler support chart made by the Victoria Chart Company. This is exactly the kid of reward chart that Husband and I have been looking for. All of the goals are written in a positive format. Instead of increasing awareness about negative behavior by making statements like “I didn’t misbehave” they have statements like “I’ve spoken nicely” and “I’ve picked up my toys.” It’s what the Victoria Chart Company calls their Encourage & Praise method.
In addition to the positive descriptions, the activity stickers and smiley faces feature bright and engaging colors and beautiful artwork. That was the first thing that Husband noticed. The stickers are all removable and reusable too. When we first opened up the package we just picked the stickers that applied to us. Later we decided to use some of the blank stickers with our custom goals and put them in order (loosely based on the order of the day).
I really like that the stickers feature boys and girls with varying skin tones. The Kidlies, as they are called, are the 24 characters you will find in the various Victoria Chart Companies charts. You can read all the Kidlies personal profiles here. Just like ordinary children, the Kidlies each have their own unique personalities, preferences, strengths, and challenges.
This particular chart is supposed to be good for children as young as 12 months but I’m not sure that I see a benefit for a child that young. Babe likes peeling the stickers off but she’s too young to understand why we are putting them on the chart. However, reviewing the stickers gave us the opportunity to reflect on the areas we want to help Babe with. If anything, I would say that this chart is motivating the Husband and I to model and praise desired behaviors. And that’s not a bad thing. We will definitely continue using this chart on a daily basis but I can’t wait until Babe begins to recognize what we are doing and takes an interest in her own progress.
I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
